What it Costs to Run

Most of your favorite digital publications are labors of love, run [at a loss] by people who love to read and just want you to have nice things. Sound & Color is starting as an ephemeral venue; we'll run for a year to start, and if the stars (and subscribers) see fit that we should continue, maybe longer than that.

Here you'll find the breakdown of expected expenses so you have an idea of how far your subscription goes (and what you can expect to spend if you launch your own little project).

Considerations

• The budget as presented assumes that all short stories will max out the allowed word count.
• Sound & Color works on a quality>quantity model of publication: We won't be publishing anything we don't love in order to fill a quota. Each issue's budget is structured on a 3-shorts + 1 flash breakdown, but each issue's delivered story quantity may vary based on the quality of submissions received. For example, a given issue may have a stronger showing in flash submissions, so we may publish more than one flash piece in addition to the budgeted 3 short stories. Similarly, if a prompt receives only 2 short story submissions that meet our standards, only 2 short stories will make that issue, with the rest of the slots filled by flash pieces or commissioned special features.

There are a few different ways to support Sound & Color Magazine! Subscribing (then subsequently reading and talking about it) generally helps sustain the publications you love! Below, you'll also find sponsorship options, and an invitation to make other donations. If we meet our overall funding goal, we'll make all stories publicly available instead of just the first story of every issue. Stories not behind a paywall increase discoverability and potential award recognition for authors!

These numbers assume that all of these subscribers are active for the full calendar year! Accounting for lapsed subscribers is built into the Other Admin line item so as not to impact less flexible operational expenses such as hosting or author compensation.
